The aim of the Nolan Art Gallery and School is to explore the world of contemporary art through making art in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Adult Classes at the Nolan Art Gallery and School aim to develop the skill and creative ability of each student so they can achieve their own artistic outcomes. This is based on their experience and interests and is organised into exercises to develop and extend their capabilities and understandings.
Those who simply join the studio to work in parallel with a class/classes and ask for advice when necessary are welcome.

The art school was started in 1999 by Betty Nolan, who created a small, student centred studio where adults and children could study art in a relaxed environment. Since that time, the studio has developed a reputation as the source of quality art education, delivered by trained and experienced teachers.

The space is a large art studio/gallery located on the first floor, Salamanca Arts Centre - right opposite the Long Gallery. Each student is encouraged to exhibit in community exhibitions as well as our in house show.

Drawing from nature - the old-fashioned way. A course of exercises for everyone who is serious about learning to draw.
Tonal drawing, planes and surfaces, contour drawing, creating the illusion of three dimensions, self-expression and more. Work at your own pace, using a variety of drawing materials. This is a good, solid introduction for those who have never drawn before and a challenge for those who want to improve their skills.
Tuesday Evening Classes
time: 1900 - 2100
Getting started in art - develop powers of observation, imagination and design using a variety of mediums; tonal observation and drawing, observing colour, colour theory/colour mixing.
Complete beginners work through a series of structured exercises before beginning their own projects, whether drawing in charcoal, pastel or pencil, or painting in oil or acrylic paint. Those with some experience work on their own thing from the start.

Course content may include any or all of
  • composition and design
  • adding colour to drawing (pen and wash using coloured washes)
  • drawing the head
  • drawing animals and people; basic anatomy
  • perspective and scaling
  • quick sketching in various mediums
  • working from photographs
  • drawing/painting from memory
  • drawings/paintings based on various subjects (e.g. draperies, rocks, glass) or themes (e.g. childhood, circus)
  • drawing/painting from imagination; being playful

Elizabeth teaches drawing in pencil, charcoal or other mediums; painting in oils or acrylic and pastel drawing.

Emphasis is on the individual, finding out what participants hope to learn, then helping them develop their own personal style in a light-hearted, friendly atmosphere. Classes are small and lessons are fun and sociable.

The classes emphasise drawing and foundational skills that will help students plan, carry out and evaluate their art work, and students may draw or paint as they please.

The class content (above) is only a suggestion; subject matter and class structure will vary in response to student requirements.

For more information and enrolment, ring the Nolan Art Gallery and School on: (03) 6223 3449 or visit the website: www.nolanart.com.au.

Unless you are an experienced painter, do not buy materials until after your first lesson, when Elizabeth will explain what you need.

Class Intake

Although we are loosely organised into four terms, you can join a class at any time during the year.
Artists can also have a studio membership which allows holders to plan their own curriculum and paint parallel to classes.
Some basic materials are provided to get novice students started but a list of required materials for purchase will be provided once you have enrolled.
The classes have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where the process is as enjoyable as the product.
