Oil Painting for Everyone

Elizabeth Barsham demystifies oil painting, the easiest of all mediums and ideal for beginners. Learn how to paint a simple landscape then work on your own project. Practise colour mixing, tonal painting and some basic colour theory in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Absolute Beginners Painting

Always wanted to paint, but don’t know where to start? These classes take you from simple tonal drawing in charcoal to a still-life study in oil paint. On the way you will be introduced to pastel drawing and gouache painting, learn some basic colour theory and copy an impressionist painting of your choice. Materials will cost you about $120, but you need not buy everything at once; at the end of each lesson Elizabeth will explain what you need for the following week.

How to Draw Everything

Start with a still life, look at landscape, play with perspective and even wrestle with a nude. Elizabeth Barsham will show you the basics of drawing using your choice of medium. For complete beginners and those with some experience. Model fee for one lesson included.

Where to find us

Hobart Adult Education Centre - Church Street
Turn right off Elizabeth Street into Warwick Street if you are travelling towards North Hobart. (Turn left into Warwick Street if you are travelling towards the City Centre).
Take the first turn to the left (opposite Holy Trinity Church) and you are in Church Street.
The centre is on the left hand side set back from the street with a car park and sign visible from the street.
The first building is the Administration building and classrooms are situated in the rear building. To get to classrooms follow the red brick path from the rear corner of the Administration building to the double blue doors. The art room is room 3, at the end of the passage.

Rosny LINC, former Rosny Library, Bligh St, Rosny Park. Car parking at rear; enter Barnard Dve from Gordons Hill Rd. Note: the Bligh St car park at the front of the building is limited to 1 hour parking only during the day. After hours access (evening classes): ring doorbell (green light on wall left hand side of main doors) - do not be put off if the building appears to be in darkness.

The Kingborough/Huon Adult Education Centre, at 8 Hutchins Street is situated behind the Council Chambers on Channel Highway. We are directly opposite the Library and Police Station, parking entrance located off Church Street (turn left from Hutchins Street; there is a narrow driveway just before you get to Beach Rd). The art room is in Building C.
